Project three
For project 3, I tackled still lives with the focus on different types of lighting . I decided that two of my images would be set in a dark room and two would be set in a heavily lit environment. To showcase sunlight I used a yellow background and to represent darkness I used grays and blacks. I wanted there to be contrast throughout my pieces this time. For this project I used watercolor for 3 of my pantings and fast drying oils for one. I found the oil easier to work with despite taking a long time to dry.
I researched still lives on the internet and learned they can be ultra realistic but they could also be more abstract. I tried to shoot for somewhere in the middle. Realism isn't always my strong point so I didn't aim for an ultra realist look. For items such as the wine bottle I tried to use circular brushstrokes to add texture. I used round brushes but also found angular worked will with some fine detail. For some of the painting I created a scene in my home and sketched it onto the canvas . I based me paintings off of those sketches . The sketches were my outlines to the paintings . I used three 9 by 12 canvas panels and a slightly larger sheet of water color paper for my canvas. I feel this study allowed me to improve my ability to paint and my understanding of still lives. It isn't my usually style but perhaps it is what I needed to improve my own style.
1.For my first painting I used oil paints and a light background . I used blue to try to add some texture to the clear glass. That was my biggest challenge in creating this piece. I couldn't get a super realistic feel to the paintings and I see some elements of abstract painting in it.
In conclusion I threw out many pieces and used the ones I felt worked best. I feel I improved me ability to paint still lives and have a better understanding of what makes up a still life. It also gave me a chance to draw from observation and then paint what I see.
