Assignment 4 :Landscapes

For project 4 I attempted to design landscapes with influences of  abstract and expressionist styles. To do so I used brushstrokes and layers to give the paintings some feeling. I tried to steer away from realism and focus on evoking emotion in my art work.

The first painting is in watercolor on 9x 12 canvas panel.  It contains a solo house on a beach under a dark sky. I aimed for some abstraction in the painting . The dark skies and angels are meant to create an unsettling mood and shows that a storm is coming.
The second painting is also in watercolor on watercolor paper. It was meant to provoke warm and safe emotions . The cliff towers above a forrest. For the sky I used brushstrokes going in different directions for  dimension and feeling.

In the third painting I introduce a medium I have yet to use in this class. I used gouache so that I could have more depth and for layering. I found it is better for layering than watercolor and with the addition of water I can accommodate it to the desired thickness. The painting is of a deserted road that runs through a desert . The city is in the background. To get an expressionist feel I used brushstrokes and layers. It is my favorite of the three and I feel it is the truest to the expressionist style.

In conclusion, I learned about landscape paintings and expressionism and abstraction. I aimed to create emotive pieces of work of dramatic landscapes. I had several throw away paintings because I was trying to get the feel of landscapes. I settled on the three I felt best fit the assignment . For one and two my sketches were done on the canvas as an outline. For sketch 3 it was in a sketch book and I eyed it as I painted. I feel I have succeeded in getting more comfortable with landscapes .
