Final painting

Image
For my final Painting I wanted to paint in the expressionist style. Expressionism pays attention to emotions and makes the viewer feel. I used colors, shapes and brushstrokes to create emotion. My medium was acrylics and stretched canvas. I worked large. my canvas was 16 by 20. I wanted a piece where I put more time into it than other pieces. I wanted it to be epic. Is started sketching out my shapes and figures on a sketchpad. The sketch was not an outline but a guide. I then went to the canvas and looked back on my sketch as I was painting.  My painting is entitled "The Darkest reflection" It is of a human figure looking into the mirror to find that he is consumed with darkness . The light of the main figure leaks out toward his reflection. Above the two figured is a spiral resembling a tornado. In negative space I used my brushes to create patterns. I also splatted some paint to create texture. Overall, I believe the painting is true to the expressionist style and I believ...

Assignment 4 :Landscapes

Image
For project 4 I attempted to design landscapes with influences of  abstract and expressionist styles. To do so I used brushstrokes and layers to give the paintings some feeling. I tried to steer away from realism and focus on evoking emotion in my art work.  The first painting is in watercolor on 9x 12 canvas panel.  It contains a solo house on a beach under a dark sky. I aimed for some abstraction in the painting . The dark skies and angels are meant to create an unsettling mood and shows that a storm is coming.    The second painting is also in watercolor on watercolor paper. It was meant to provoke warm and safe emotions . The cliff towers above a forrest. For the sky I used brushstrokes going in different directions for  dimension and feeling.  In the third painting I introduce a medium I have yet to use in this class. I used gouache so that I could have more depth and for layering. I found it is better for layering than watercolor and with the add...

Project three

Image
For project 3, I tackled still lives with the focus on different types of lighting . I decided that two of my images would be set in a dark room and two would be set in a heavily lit environment. To showcase sunlight I used a yellow background and to represent darkness I used grays and blacks. I wanted there to be contrast throughout my pieces this time. For this project I used watercolor for 3 of my pantings and  fast drying oils for one. I found the oil easier to work with despite taking a long time to dry.  I researched still lives on the internet and learned they can be ultra realistic but they could also be more abstract. I tried to shoot for somewhere in the middle. Realism isn't always my strong point so I didn't aim for an ultra realist look. For items such as the wine bottle I tried to use circular  brushstrokes to add texture. I used round brushes but also found angular worked will with some fine detail. For some of the painting I created a scene in my ho...
