Project 2
In project two I tackled painting portraits of different races. I found it to be both challenging and needed practice. it took me out of my comfort zone. To create even more of a challenge I did all my paintings but one in watercolor to get more comfortable with the medium. I aimed for realism though they still are true to my style that is slightly expressionist.
Through my research I painted mid tones first and lighter colors last. I used neutral colors and my colors included, white, black, yellows, reds, tan, delicate rose, raw umber, burnt umber and burnt Sienna. This palette allowed me to paint a range of skin tones. For skin the brush often went in round motions. For hair I found up and down motions and adding blue gives the hair some texture. I used round and flat brushes.
I fond teeth and noses to be the most challenging part of painting portraits. Getting out of my expressionistic style was hard.
The first painting is an attempt at the darkest skin. I used various shades of brown water color and black for the online. This portrait has a liner feel to it and it is my favorite of the 4.It is done on watercolor paper. The eyes are very stylized and I aimed for strong facial features.
